Hoop Dance

Hoop dance is a mesmerizing grounded art form that originates from indigenous storytelling involving hoops as props to create both static and dynamic shapes representing a variety of symbols or storytelling elements. Traditional hoop dance has existed for thousands of years, though the plastic version was popularized in the 1950s. Hoop dance was picked up by the dance community and incorporated into rhythmic and lyrical presentations, and expanded as a practice enjoyed by the flow arts community.

As a flow art modality, hula hoops can be wheeled along the ground, tossed in the air, or twirled around the limbs, neck, or waist. Hoops come in a variety of sizes and weights. Hoop dance is accessible for individuals with any experience level to explore.
